Paintings

My paintings are concerned with specific places, people, times or events. Recurrent themes occur through the depiction of interiors and landscapes, captured at emotionally charged or psychologically significant moments. I enjoy exploring our relationship with the commonplace and ethereal, the momentary and monumental. By working each subject through a progressive series of paintings, I aim to present the viewer with a rich visual experience that is both aesthetically and emotionally engaging. The paintings explore the relationships and possibilities presented by combining realism. symbolism and abstraction. I believe this approach offers exciting tensions and harmonies which directly reflect my chosen subject matter.

DRAWINGS

I have enjoyed drawing and teaching drawing over many years. I believe that drawing is fundamental in relation to creative expression. Drawing offers a huge range of applications and possibilities. Through drawing ideas can be physically researched and materialised. Drawing is constantly responding to changes in artistic thinking, materials and practice. I believe drawing offers accessible entry points through which to explore critical and creative decision-making. It is a useful tool which develops observational and artistic skills and heightens creative sensibilities. It can initiate an artistic process or exist as a discrete activity. I see drawing as both a means and an end.

My oil paintings are on board or paper rather than on canvas. The work is produced in series, usually numbering 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. Each series is dedicated to exploring a specific idea or theme. The scale of the paintings is all the same within each set (unless I'm being naughty). The size between sets varies  from very small-scale works measuring just a few centimetres to much larger work.

PRINTS

Too often printmaking is seen as a complementary, and at worst a peripheral activity in an artist’s creative output. I find the various printmaking processes I use absorbing and encompassing. Each technique offers its own attributes and possibilities. Scale and graphic impact are important considerations when choosing which technique to use with a particular image or idea. When I am particularly pleased with a print and choose to make a number of copies, the physical and mental energy required to sustain a repetitive and demanding process throughout the production of a large edition can be really satisfying. It's hard to explain why? Maybe it's the simple joy of manufacturing something, knowing you can produce more than one.

Ebay 1_edited.jpg
Ebay.jpg

A blast from the past being sold on ebay.

All is lucent

Such light dispersed as melody

Of this rock held, moss held flow

Be safe

Where each is all do dwell

Be of this

Watercress sways, dancing moon water

Be of yourself

There in skipping water, playful of such sweetness

Love you

A gladness, as the sun

Be of you

Bold as five

Be of kindness

Buttons, bottle tops, shells are of this

Orchard stream

All is held

Be loved

Still, the dancing leaf of tree

Still, the day now sleeps

Sing with water’s song

Please know

Of all

Brings of you love

Keep upon you love

Make day love

Keep it through your dreaming night

Be of love

Keep it true, keep it under your pillow

For you are five years old

You have all the love

All your love, big as tomorrow

Made of you
